There are less risky ways to get a rakeback from your online poker play than to have to give your personal information up to a 3rd party, and then expect that third party to pay you for life. How can you avoid this bs and get some extra $$ every month?

First, you need to go to one of the following websites and register an account. After registering, you will be issued a URL that you can post just about anywhere-blog,e-mail,bboard,etc. You will need to post it. This link is tagged with your own ID, for tracking purposes. These sites are reputable and will pay you on time every month, either through check, Wire or Neteller.

Joseph played a 7c3d, one of the worst hands in poker. His opponent was Steve Dannenmann, he was playing Ad3c.

The blinds were $300k/$150, with a $50k ante. Dannenmann raised to 700k, Hachem called. The flop came 4d5d6h, Hachem checked, Dannemann fell for the trap and bet another $700k. Hachem raised him $1,700,000, and Dannenmann called. He was done.

The flop came As, and Dannenmann had a top pair. Hachem immediately bet $2m into the pot. Dannenmann thinking he had something raised to $5m. Hachem went all in, and Dannenmann called.

The flop was a 4c.

Joseph Hachem then walked away with $7,500,000 for his effort.

I just got served at Poker Stars

I played in the Poker Stars Blogger Freeroll. There were 1467 registered, I think half of that showed up. I placed 556. Blinds were 300/150. I was not getting cards, frustrated I played a TT and lost to a KK. The first hour was kinda weird because there were only 4 of us at a table of 10, and we had to play through the "no-shows". Worse, 2 of the live players were playing aggressive. I knocked out the live player to my left early. I think he/she was 1455 or something. That had to hurt. One of the players recognized that we should try and kill each other and we should split the "no-shows" pots. I hope this is not collusion, but it sucks having 6 people not playing. Maybe this should be considered an advantageous scenario....I don't know.

I was getting such crappy cards it was amazing I lasted as long as I did. Lesson learned: with the action as aggressive as it was, you gotta play strong hands to survive and have a large enough chip stack to weather the blinds.

Why Satellites are Worth It

Seems like I hear about satellite poker tournaments during ESPN's World Series of Poker telecasts every Tuesday night-over and over. Why? Because there's always some player at the final table who got there starting out at a $5 MTT(multi-table tournament). Of course, the most famous is Chris Moneymaker. He won the WSOP 2003 main event, coming from nowhere to beat Sam Farha. He won over $1,000,000. Some credit Chris with igniting the poker craze. Anyway you look at it, his story of making it to the finals via online poker satellite tournaments is pretty awesome.

You are probably saying to yourself-"there's only one Chris Moneymaker, and everyone is on the bandwagon now, the WSOP is too competitive".

But there's more poker tournaments than just the WSOP and WPT. There are some extremely popular tournaments handled by the online poker rooms that have $100,000 to $1M paydays. For example, Party Poker hosts the Party Poker Million every year, which is a Limit Texas Holdem poker tournament. The finals are held on a cruise ship of all places. The prize pool for this year event is supposed to be larger than the 7.5mill they had for the 2005 event. Last year's winner was Michael Gracz, and he pulled down $1.5m. 2nd place pulled in a cool $1m, and 3rd place took $700k. There were a total of 735 players for the Party Poker Million 2005, 668 of which gained entrance by winning satellites online. This tournament made money for a lot of players. If you placed in 180th place or up you made at least $5k. It was six figures for the top 9 players this year.

That's pretty juicy.

Ok, satellites can be worthwile outside of the WSOP world, But where should one start?

This is an easy answer, because with satellites, it's all about how often are they are scheduled, small buy-in amounts, and number of fishes. Just finished a 4 hour sesh at AP and Paradise

I started playing the 2+1 Sit and Go's at Absolute Poker this afternoon. In four games I finished 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 7th out of a 10 player table.

I didn't suffer many horrible bad beats, but I was getting really weak cards. I took a couple chances and won pre-river with a couple aggressive bets. But mostly I was getting crappy card after crappy card. My win % was 19....weak. My flop view % was 38%.

The competition wasn't weak either. I've been having ok run at AP for a while, I guess this is just a fluke.

Paradise was nicer to me. I played 3 5+1 SnG's, and had a 2nd, 3rd, and a fourth. I played tighter, which helped.

I'm talking about betting a medium-weak hand on the river.

Maybe you're thinking, "Wait, I do that sometimes! What's wrong with that?" Here's what's wrong with it: the bet has no upside.

There are only two reasons to bet the river. The first is to bet for value -- a bet you make when you expect to win even when you get called. The second is to bluff, when you're hoping your opponent will fold a winner. Your strongest hands work as value bets, and your weakest hands work as bluffs. The problem with these medium-weak hands is that the hands your opponent will lay down here are losers anyway, and the hands you get called by almost certainly beat yours.

With a hand that has neither value betting nor bluffing power, why not just check?

I'm playing hold'em and an opponent and I get down to the last card. The board is Jc 9d 2s 9s 8c and I've got A-K. My opponent bets. I obviously can't beat any legitimate value-bet hands, but I decide to call as a defensive measure, not wanting anyone to think they can run over me. I'm thinking this or maybe A-Q is the absolute minimum I'd have to be holding to justify the call, and there are certainly worse hands I could have gotten to the river with that I'd have to fold here. I'm pleasantly surprised when my opponent turns over A-Q.

So what is he thinking? He can't possibly think I'd call with enough hands like K-Q to make this a value bet. But I'm not going to fold any of my pairs, so this surely isn't a bluff either.

Clearly, my opponent isn't thinking. That brings me to an important point. Before you make any play, you should always ask yourself, "What am I trying to accomplish?" In the case of betting on the river, you are hoping for your opponent to call with a worse hand or fold with a Better one. In the instance of the A-Q hand above, there was no chance the bet would accomplish either of these goals.

So what *should* you do with medium-weak hands? Obviously, if you're last to act, you should just check and hope your hand is good enough to rake in the chips. If you're acting first, and we ignore the check-raise possibility, you have two options: check and if your opponent bets call, or check and fold. Let's compare these two plays against betting.

Checking and calling is clearly a better play than betting. It gives you the opportunity to induce a bluff and win more money against worse hands. You also lose less against superior hands. This is obviously a win-win over betting. Checking and folding might be better still, but it's risky. You risk the whole pot for a single bet. In any case check-calling is clearly a superior play to betting but you may be able to do even better still.

As far as I can tell, there are two possible reasons people mistakenly bet these hands. First, they might get lost in the hand and not understand the strength of their own holdings, and think they are bluffing. The other possibility is fear. After all, if you check, I might bet and force a very tough decision on you. No one likes to face the hard choices, and it's often a good idea to avoid them when possible, but this particular pre-emptive strike gives too much away. Throwing away money isn't a rational response to the fear of decision-making.

Let's talk more about the bluff for a moment. Though it may seem counter-intuitive, you should only bluff with your absolute worst hands. Beginning players watch these bluffs on TV and view them as horribly reckless or dangerous. But your worst hands have just as much bluffing power as your medium-weak hands. The difference is that the medium-weak hands also have value as checking hands that the worst ones don't. This makes a better case for bluffing on the river with the 2-3 since it's the *only* value that hand has. After all, how else will you possibly take down the pot with absolute garbage, if not by bluffing with it? This is why you see Gus Hanson or Phil Ivey turn over the most wretched cards when they get caught stealing, or even occasionally when they get away with it. Also, you're much less likely to rattle your opponent when you turn over an A-Q no-pair when your opponent laid down his K-Q (we call this, "bluffing with the best hand") as you do with your 6-3. It can be disconcerting even to good players to get bluffed out of a big pot.

One last anecdote from the WSOP No Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw event some years back. Our hero raises before the draw and the big blind calls. His opponent draws one, and our hero stands pat. After the draw, the big blind bets out and our hero makes a huge raise. The big blind goes into the tank for a long time before finally calling with an audible sigh. Big blind turns over an 8 low and our hero mucks, but the rail wants to know what he lost with. Our hero turns over his hand and shows a full house K-K-K-Q-Q. (For those not familiar with lowball, the name says it all. The best *low* hand wins.) The railbirds, so impressed with such an audacious bluff, burst into spontaneous applause despite the play's failure.

Was the audience right to be impressed? Hardly. It's true, our hero bluffed with one of the worst hands imaginable, just as this article implores you to do. But first of all, he bluffed with this hand before the draw when he had a bunch of hands he was going to fold anyway. This article only applies to betting on the final round. Secondly, you want to bluff with hands that give you the best chance of success. Our hero was holding five picture cards which decreases the likelihood that his opponent would have a folding hand before the draw, and lessen his likelihood of "bricking" on the draw. This makes the bluff much more likely to be doomed. The classic "correct" hand for trying this play looks more like 2-2-2-3-3. But that's a story for another article.

Paradise Poker is at it again. The first Million Dollar Freeroll was so popular, they've added another! The winner of this Million Dollar Freeroll will walk away with $1,000,000. PLUS over $150,000 in prizes for the Top 500 main event finalists. No strings attached. Sort of.

Here's everything you'll need to know:

1. How do I enter?

There is NO Direct entry into the $1,000,000 main event.
Players MUST win their seat into the main event through one of our FREE daily heats.

Starting August 29th and running through to November 30th, we'll be running three heats every day. Each heat will be titled "FreeMillion" and will be FREE to enter. You can find these tournaments listed under the Million Tab in our Tournament Lobby.

The 3 daily "FreeMillion" Heats will start at the times posted below and will award seats as listed:

4pm ET = Top 10 players advance to $1,000,000 main event.
9pm ET = Top 15 players advance to $1,000,000 main event.
1am ET = Top 20 players advance to $1,000,000 main event.
* 9pm, 2am, 6am London time

***IMPORTANT*** Tournament registration will open 2 hours prior to the posted tournament start time! Register early to ensure yourself a seat.

Players can enter any Heat they wish and as many as they wish (subject to terms and conditions below). Each Heat can accept a maximum of 4,000 players. Players are only eligible to win 1 seat into the $1,000,000 main event. The ParadisePoker.com Million Dollar Freeroll is open to anyone that has a real money account (no deposit necessary for your first Heat attempt).

2. Can I enter more than once?

After your first free heat attempt, you can enter further heats by collecting "Million Points". Collect 100 points and you will receive a pop-up message stating that you are again eligible to enter another heat of your choice.

"Million Points" will start getting counted, starting at zero, for all players, as of 12:01am Eastern on August 29th. For specific details on how these points are collected please click here.
3. $1,000,000 Online Main Event

The $1,000,000 main event will take place on December 3rd at 2pm Eastern (7pm London time).

Note: Given the number of entries, this tournament will be played over 2 days (December 3rd and 4th). Play will start at 2pm Eastern and will continue until Midnight Eastern (5am London) at which time the tournament will be paused at the beginning of the next break. Play will resume on Sunday, December 4th at 2pm EDT and will continue until only 10 players remain.

4. Final 10 will play face-to-face in Paradise!

The 10 players at the final table will be taken on an all-expenses paid luxury vacation to an exotic Paradise location to finish the remaining portion of the tournament face-to-face in front of the tv cameras. The winner will walk away one million dollars richer.

The live final table is tentatively scheduled to take place mid-January 2006.

5. Full Prize Pool Payouts

1st = $1,000,000 (plus a free vacation for two to mystery tropical location)
2nd-10th = $10,000 (plus a free vacation for two to a mystery tropical location)
11th = $1,000 12th-50th = $500
51st-100th = $100
101st -500th = $50

3. The game played in the daily Heats called "Free Million" will be Texas Hold'em No Limit. Each player will start with 1500 in chips. The blinds will increase every 12 minutes according to our blind schedule.

5. The game played in the "$1,000,000 Main Event" will be Texas Hold'em No Limit. Each player will start with 2500 in chips. The blinds will increase every 30 minutes according to our blind schedule.
6. In order to be eligible a player must setup a real money account, which includes his full contact details, so that Paradise can pay any winnings to his account should he win. No deposit is required for your first Heat attempt. Once a player has completed his first free Heat attempt, he will then be required to collect 100 "Million Points" and then will be automatically made eligible for another heat of your choice. Each player can continue to enter further Heats after meeting the 100 point requirement. A pop-up message will appear once you've collected 100 points, that will read "Congratulations! You are again eligible to play in another Million Dollar Freeroll heat".
7. How to Collect "Million Points" for entering additional heats:
You automatically accumulate "Million Points" by playing in raked cash games, multi-table tournaments and mini tournaments.
Earn Million Points for Cash Game play as follows:
One point is awarded for playing in each raked game when the rake reaches:
$0.50 for fixed limit games with stakes $0.50/$1.00 and lower
$0.75 for fixed limit games with stakes $1/$2
$1.00 for no limit games, pot limit games and fixed limit games with stakes $2/$4 and above
Earn Million Points for Tournament play as follows:
Five points are awarded for each $1 in tournament fees paid.
Example #1 A $20 + $2 mini tournament, each player is awarded 10 points. $2 x 5 = 10
Example #2 A multi-table tournament with $30 buy-in (9% tourney fee), each player will be awarded 14 points. $30 x 0.09 = $2.70 x 5 = 13.5 = 14 (partial points are always rounded up to the nearest whole number). In the event of a re-buy and add-on tournament, players would receive additional points for each and every re-buy and add-on.
Play money games and non-raked games do not earn points.
"Million Points" will start getting counted, starting at zero, for all players, as of Monday, 12:01am Eastern on August 29th.
8. Offer only open to players players aged 21 and over in the USA, aged 18 and over in the UK and Europe, and players aged 19 and over in Canada.. In any instance, players must be of the legal age of majority as determined by the laws of the country where you live. Employees and immediate family members of employees of ParadisePoker.com, its associated companies, affiliates, advertising and promotional agencies are not eligible to take part in the Promotion. Entry to the Promotion is limited to those people who are resident in countries where their registration and use of the Cardroom is permitted by the law of their country.
9. The company reserves the right to ask for proof of age from any customer and customer accounts may be suspended until satisfactory proof of age is provided.

Getting Luv at Full Tilt Poker

Ok, well it shouldn't actually be described as love, but I did manage to finally win a couple times at Full Tilt's low limit tables this past week. I also took my lumps. Of the 5 times I played SnG's at Full Tilt, I placed in the money 2 times. One 2nd and one win. The win earned me a $26 token. The other times I got knocked out in 6 or 7th place. Not first, thankfully. Going out first sucks. I am still a virgin to going out first.

Full Tilt deserves more players, it is a very cool poker room.

I also played at Absolute Poker, 6 SnG's this past week. I have better luck at AP, but again it wasn't always smooth sailing. I finished in the money 3 times, winning once. The win was nice. I played a $10/$1 SnG and won. Taking home $27.

What did I learn?

Aggressive betting is the only way to go. While I don't have pot odds memorized, I know what the good hands are, what the possible cards are that can hurt me, what's showing on the table, where I am positioned in the betting line up. I also learned it's important to play average hands and take a loss once in awhile. Sitting on the sidelines, and only playing blinds until you have above average cards will make you the fish to a great white at the table. It also helped that I knocked out at least 2 people early in the game. The $10 SnG I won was awesome, because I knocked out 4 guys myself. Everyone was scared of me after the third one went down. #4 sacrificed himself to the gods. I bullied the 4 remaining players into submission, taking $200-$400 pots uncontested. I knocked out the 3rd place player on a A7 vs QQ. The QQ went all in after flopping nothing but 6T3. I called and hit the A on the turn. River was a 3. The last guy standing was down 5 to 1 in chips. It took 8 hands to end his misery.

Also, I tried to get a game at midnight at Hollywood poker's SnG tables and it was a frickin ghost town. After waiting 28 minutes I bolted. Worse I was at a table with 7 other people for 15 of those minutes. Weird night at Hollywood. That doesn't seem too far fetched I guess. Hollywood, Ca. is pretty out there.....

Getting served at Full Tilt

At times it felt like people were taking turns whupping my ass...

Editor's Note: I played some sit and go's at Full Tilt last night, and got served 3 out of 4 games. The tables were $5 and .10. I don't know what was wrong with me but I was real sloppy. I kept getting sucked into poor pot odds. Part of it was the competition, there were some aggressive players that kept the action hot. It didn't help that I was getting crappy flops.

I did manage to help myself with some good position bets which allowed me to finish 5th, 4th, and 6th. Not very good outcomes, but I had a couple decent hands.

Full Tilt has lot of tables going, but no low limit tables. Everything is $4-5 min. After watching my bankroll shrink to next to nothing, I decided against reloading and try another room.

So I went over to Absolute Poker. Absolute has great low limits, down to .10 last time a checked. I started playing the $2 SnG's, and had some great game. I finished 3rd in my first, then 4th and 5th. There was some good competition throughout the games. Absolute Poker is an awesome poker room. I still love Full Tilt. It's hard to choose between them.

I just got finished playing a $5+.10 single table sit and go tourney with Ronny Cox and Pamela Gidley. You might remember Ronny from Total Recall. Pamela has been on CSI a bunch of times. I am not too familiar with her work to be honest. Both of them were very cool.

Ring vs. Tournament play-which is better?

Lately, I have been playing ring tables at Hollywood Poker and Full Tilt, but no tourneys. I am getting the feeling that tournaments are the way to go. Tourneys typically take a couple hours. Which is problem for me. Ring games allow you sit and play, then leave when you feel like it. Ring games seem to be faster experiences. But ring games seem to require severe patience in order to make any money. Here's a good example of what I am talking about.

Last friday I played a .25/.50 table at Full Tilt. There were 7-9 players playing. I started with $20, and got bored with the lack of hands I was getting pretty quickly. This boredom caused me to play way too many hands as time dragged on, and I started to get caught in way too many Rivers and Turns. It was hard to get a feel for the players since some came and went. I was frickin' bored! I couldn't play tight all night and have some fun.

This approach did not work for me. I lost the $20 at about 25 hands. I lost the majority on a hand where I had an ace high straight versus a full house hit on the river. Bad luck maybe. I was so bored I gambled when I shouldn't have. I committed after I hit the straight on turn. The guy I tossed most of my money to was showing that he had a big hand after the river. I laid down a 1/4 pot bet and he matched in quickly. A bad sign I ignored because I was frickin' bored.

Alright, so I walked away a little shell shocked that it was over so quick. I was even discouraged enough to say I wouldn't play again for awhile. That idea lasted exactly 4 days. Not bad compared to most poker junkies.

Last night I started up at Hollywood poker, .10/.20 table I think. It was late. And I was a little baked from some green bud from Humboldt-thinking that might mellow me out while playing. I kept telling myself to be patient, and play some hands sparingly until I got a feel for the table. Nice plan. I get so fucking bored after a while I just want to start betting and get things going.

Don't get me wrong, I did play some position bets and won a couple turns with some "all in" moves. But for the most part it was boredom times 10. I just tried to knuckle up and persevere. The problem with this strategy is that there were a couple decent players who more than willing to take my money by calling me everytime I really didn't want to be called. I did show my cards to set up a couple cards to set up some wins (I will discuss this further in a future post).

$20 later I was at Full Tilt playing a .10/.10 table. I was up and down, I reloaded my cash twice with $10 after getting impatient again. I settled and perserved for 2 hours and managed to win back all the money I had lost plus a little extra.

Maybe tournaments will force me to be patient. Ring tables seem to require extra patience. I am going to play a tourney in the next couple days-probably a freeroll at Full Tilt, Party Poker, Poker Room, Hollywood poker, or Absolute Poker.

Club Dice Casino voted one of the top ten Internet casinos by Jupiter Media Metrix.

Brandy Casino is launched in a major deal with a Russian group of land based casino operators.

Tropez Casino and Gold Gate Casino are released featuring 'new generation' client software, 45 new games, animated 3D graphics, faster client software downloads and more.

Leading operators Sunny Group and Intercontinental Casinos launch new versions of their successful online casinos using a modified version of Playtech's 'new generation' client software. Sunny Group launches Casino Fortune, Miami Beach Casino and Mapau Casino; InterContinental Casinos launch USA Casino and New York Casino.
